Chapter 1 of My Novel

Hey Everyone!

So I’m writing a million different stories because I always have a ton of ideas but this is the one I’m trying to focus on. I haven’t named it yet but I really like it so far, so I thought I’d post the first chapter. Also, this story has five different POVs (Point Of View). I would love any feedback y’all have!

Edilyn Keyair

There are holes.

The blue, satin material I hold in my hands is covered in several holes.

“Edilyn,” Madam Falka’s voice snaps me out of my daze.

“Ma’am, I think we have rats again.” I brush my curly bangs out of my eyes and hold up the material. Madam’s expression hardens, for this was the fourth time we get rats.

“I’ll ask Dina to set some traps.” The old woman sighs. I can tell she is trying to hide her frustration. “In the meantime you need to finish that dress for the second lord’s daughter.” I nod as she turns and walks away. I hurriedly grab the unfinished gown and begin working on it.

Suddenly, the ground begins to shake and before my ears know what’s happening they are filled with a sound that feels like someone is ripping my eardrums into a million pieces. My eyes widen as I hear a scream come from outside the small tailor shop.

“We’re being attacked!”

“The castle’s been hit!”

“It’s the Irks!”

The Irks… Those words triggered something inside me. …Rage.

I run outside, toward the castle where soldiers will be directing people down into underground bunkers.

“Help!” A voice ripples into my ears. I skid to a stop and spin around. On the ground is a redheaded boy who looks about my age. His leg is lodged underneath a large chunk of metal from a building nearby. I kneel down and try to lift it, but to no avail.

“Together,” I say quickly. He nods and grabs the metal chunk. I use all the force I can muster and it finally comes loose. The boy quickly slides his leg out and we drop the chunk. My left wrist flicks backward as we drop it and I grab it quickly. Damn it! It’s sprained! I think while trying to ignore the pain.

“Can you stand?” I ask him. He tries to stand but falls back down, wincing. I realize it must be broken. I hold out my right hand, he grabs ahold of it and puts his arm around me.

“Use me as if I’m your leg.” I say as we begin to move at a pathetic pace toward the castle, which, fortunately is pretty close. A couple more bombs go off and we finally arrive. There is a ridiculously long line to get underground. We, half limping, half falling make our way toward one of the soldiers. He turns to us with one of the most serious expressions I have ever seen.

“Get in line.” He says and then turns away from us.

“Um, sir, he needs medical attention.” I say urgently.

“So?” He replies. Did he just say so?

“Sir, His leg is hurt.” I hiss trying to stay calm. He points his finger at the line and gives us the most vexed expression.

“Get. In line.” He turns away from us. The redhead looks at me and whispers, “I’m fine. Let’s just get in line.” I sigh, as we make our way back toward the line.

Ok, magic time. I wave my hand around myself. I feel the magic rush through my veins like water spilling down of the edges of a cup. I feel it burst out through my fingertips and wrap it’s way around me. When the redhead shivers suddenly, I know it has completely enveloped him as well.

“Come with me,” I mutter. He gives me an incredulous look and speaks,

“Just follow me,” I drag us forward and through the people in front of us, hoping nobody saw. We get to the front and his eyes widen as though they were huge blueberries ready to explode. I can’t help but let a small smile form on the edge of my lips. Then, the soldier in front of us beckons us forward.

“Next,” She says, helping us into the trap door. Inside, is a huge room with dirt floor and metal walls filled with hundreds of people, many of them injured. Another soldier leads us to a small corner and says, “This is where you’ll stay until you’re told otherwise.” We flop down on the dirt and breath. A couple seconds later the redhead finally speaks,

“Umm… How”-

“Magic,” I interrupt. His eyes widen even more and he blinks a couple times. We stay silent for a couple seconds and I hold my wrist, trying to keep it from swelling too much. I wonder if he is too shocked to speak.

“Ruvyn,” He says unexpectedly. I look up, confused.

“My name’s Ruvyn, Ruvyn Klelzaat.” He adds.

Oh… What a weird name.

“Oh, E-Edilyn Keyair, but most people call me Lyn.” I say. Ruvyn nods and then he must’ve noticed me clutching my wrist because he looks straight at it.

“Are you okay?” He asks with strangely genuine concern.

“Y-yeah, I’m fine. I just sprained my wrist when we lifted that chunk of metal off of you.”

“Oh! I haven’t even thanked you!” He exclaims.

“It’s fine,” I say.

“Well… thanks. If you hadn’t of helped me, I probably would’ve died out there.” I crack a smile. He makes a good point. I doubt anyone else would’ve helped him. That’s the big city for you, all anyone cares about here is themselves. We stay quiet for a while until there’s a sudden commotion on the right side of the bunker.

“Help!” From what I can see, a couple of soldiers and a young boy are surrounding a woman who seems to be unconscious. The boy turns to one of the soldiers and yells.

“If you had let us get medical attention this wouldn’t have happened!” The soldier who led us to our spot is trying, in vain to comfort the boy.

“Calm down, the doctors will be here soon.”

“How soon is soon?!” The boy says with tears in his eyes.

“Soon is now.” A voice comes from the trapdoor entrance. A woman, probably about thirty with short curly brown hair has just entered the bunker. She is wearing a dirty white tank top and some brown pants. She has a huge smile, that’s missing a few teeth on her face, but I can tell she’s exhausted by the bags under her eyes. Three others, dressed the same, follow behind her, each carrying backpacks.

“May I have your attention, everyone?” She says. Most everyone looks up, except the few who are sleeping, including Ruvyn.

“My name is Doctor Gamara Adolon and this is Railar my assistant, We will be treating you all two at time. I will not tolerate any fighting. I’m very sorry if you are injured and have not been tended to yet but we will be starting at the most seriously injured. Thank you.” She says all this as if reciting something she already said a million times. Doctor Gamara and her assistants begin tending to the injured. After a while, Railar is almost to us so I shake Ruvyn awake.

“Hey, wake up.” I say.

“Uh?” He mumbles groggily while lifting his head. “What is it?”

“There’s a doctor here,” He looks around and notices the doctors.

“Oh,” Railar finishes with the man next to us, who had a large cut on his arm and makes his way toward us. He is Kra man, which are winged people with dark red hair, brown eyes and very feathery grey wings. He sets down his backpack beside Ruvyn.

“So, what’s the issue here?” Railar inquires.

“Uh, My leg is hurt.” Ruvyn says, while suspiciously eyeing the man. Railar looks at Ruvyn’s leg. He lifts up his pant.

“Tell me if this hurts.” He applies pressure to different parts of Ruvyn’s leg, during which, Ruvyn winces multiple times telling the doctor when it hurts.

“When you were injured, did you hear any popping sounds in your leg?” Ruvyn nods tiredly.

“You have a mild sprain in your knee. You’re going to have to try to keep off it. I’m going to wrap it in this to keep it from moving to much while it’s healing. If all goes well, it should be fully healed in about two to six weeks.” He finishes while wrapping some sort of elastic fabric around Ruvyn’s knee. Railar hands him a bag of ice to use on his knee. Ruvyn looks discontent as the Kra moves on to me.

I wonder why he seems upset. At least it’s not broken.

Railar figures out that I have a mild sprain in my wrist and wraps it in a bandage. He tells me not to move it too much but we all know that that’s going to be impossible with everything going on. Ruvyn and I take turns icing our injuries. He soon falls back asleep. I don’t know how this guy can sleep in all this chaos. My brain won’t stop running long enough for me to even rest my eyes. Although, I can feel exhaustion creeping up on me so I start to slip into a daze as I wonder how long we’ve been down here.

Thanks for reading!

I hope y’all liked it. I’ll be posting the next chapter soon, hopefully… *sheepish smile* I haven’t posted very frequently since I started my blog. Sorry about that, I’ve been super busy and I just started college a couple weeks ago so I don’t know how often I’ll be able to post. I will try to post whenever I can as I have been doing. Thanks again for reading!

See y’all next time and God bless,
